Chapter 21

Amanda’s mind swam back into consciousness, and it took her a moment to remember where she was: in Kirsty’s spare room.

Her head hurt and her throat was dry—last night’s wine having its undesired, but unavoidable, effects. She squinted her eyes, looking through the dark around her, to the source of light that, she assumed, had awakened her. From the doorway of the room, Amanda saw that the landing light was on, and the door open. Amanda couldn’t even remember for certain if she’d closed it—she assumed she would have, but perhaps Kirsty was up using the toilet and had peeked in to check on her? Amanda listened, but could hear nothing.

She rolled back over and closed her eyes, hoping to ignore the light, but found it futile. While it wasn’t particularly bright, the glare that seeped into her room was enough of a nuisance to keep her from getting back to sleep.

‘Goddamnit,’ she muttered to herself and swung her legs out of bed. She stood and gave herself a minute to balance herself, given the hangover and grogginess that had made her lightheaded, then made her way over to the door. She peeked out onto the landing, expecting to see the bathroom door to be closed, with Kirsty inside. It was open, with the light off. Perhaps Kirsty had finished her business and gone back to bed, but left the landing light on? Amanda listened and heard light snoring coming from her friend’s room.

She stepped out onto the landing and flicked off the light, plunging everything into darkness. Amanda then closed the door to her room and dragged herself back to bed, letting herself fall into it. She pulled the covers tightly up to her chin and closed her eyes, waiting for sleep to once again claim her.

But she could not relax, suddenly aware of a pressure on her bladder. She sighed, annoyed she hadn’t taken care of that while she was up. She debated trying to ignore it, but now that Amanda was acutely aware of the need to pee, the sensation seemed to be growing.

‘Goddamnit!’ she repeated, with more venom this time. Amanda threw the covers back and got up out of bed again. But, once up, she paused when looking over at the door to her room, seeing light from the landing seep in from the small gap at the bottom.

The light was on again.

Amanda felt a small tightening of her chest, and the first hint of fear creep into her subconscious, pushing away the grogginess.

Don’t get carried away, she told herself, not wanting to get sucked down the same road of fear and paranoia that Kirsty was currently barreling down head-long. Amanda needed to be the voice of reason. Even though, she had to admit, it was very easy to frighten oneself once that tiny seed of doubt had been planted.

‘Kirsty?’ Amanda called out, a little timidly. There was no reply. She shuffled over to the door again and, after taking a breath, slowly pulled it open.
